Looking for that something special to adorn your wedding cake? We hope to be your “one stop shop” for anything related to this topic, and not only will we be discussing a bit of the background of toppers, and the various types, but also where you will be able to obtain some of the most popular ones. Ready? Let’s get started…

Let’s start off with a more “formal type of a description”. A wedding cake topper is a small model, often made out of plastic, that sits on top of the wedding cake. It normally depicts the couple being married, often wearing formal wedding attire.

With the description out of the way, let’s look into the history of these little models. While the exact origins of the first model or figure on top of a wedding cake are not known, it is known that this tradition dates back to at least 100 years ago. In one tradition, as the story goes, the daughter of a bake was getting married. She asked her dad to make a token of the love that they felt for each other so that the whole world could see. After careful consideration, and several attempts, the baker came up with an idea…he would put two small figurines on top of the happy couple’s wedding cake. Symbolizing them, it would be a symbol of the love that they shared for each other.

On the day of the wedding, the cake and surprise “topper” were revealed. The daughter was so overjoyed that she placed the cake in the center of her wedding.

Now while there is no way to verify this story, it does show the prominence that wedding cake toppers are taking in the wedding ceremony.

By the 1950′s wedding cake toppers had become extremely popular, representing the “togetherness” of the couple getting married.

Over the years, toppers have continued in popularity, but they have changed with the times as well. For example, you can now get wedding toppers in various ethnic races, and also same sex toppers are available as well. There is also a little cottage industry that develops humerous wedding toppers, such as those depicting a bride holding her groom so he doesn’t run away from the wedding, In another humorous model, the bride is carrying her groom away from the wedding by the scruff of the neck. Some toppers even depict the hobbies of the couple getting married.

In subsequent posts we will not only be providing more details on the wonderful world of wedding cake toppers, but highlighting some of the more popular ones, along with where you can obtain them. So welcome…and enjoy…
